GENESIS

Real film - modeled, not mimicked.

The difference.

Most film emulation tools imitate a visual outcome. Genesis models a process.
Light captured by your digital sensor is taken through the full journey of being
exposed to a film negative, developed in a lab, and printed.

The result is an image that doesn't just look like film. It behaves like film.

ECN-I

The gold standard of cinematic imaging.

The lower gamma of the Vision3 family takes advantage of the most modern interimage chemistry to produce rich color in spite of lower contrast. This family also has the tightest match between stocks.

From the manufacturer:
“Vision3 takes the look and image structure that people love in motion picture film, but reduces the amount of grain in shadows. Thanks to our advanced, proprietary Dye Layering Technology (DLT), you can stretch the boundaries of exposure further than ever and still achieve outstanding results. And its extended highlight latitude offers great flexibility, letting you pull more detail out of highlights too.”

Notable titles filmed with Kodak Vision3 (2007-Present)

5203 50D
Highest saturation stock in the Vision3 family.

5213 200T
High contrast, but with a slightly softer shoulder than 5203 or 5207.

5207 250D

FILM GRAIN

Grain you already love.

Grain is the most obvious "tell" in digital film looks - get it wrong and the whole image feels fake. Genesis's grain algorithm was obsessively modeled by Steve Yedlin, ASC to match the tonal distribution, shape, size, and rhythm of physical film grain. It's been used on films including Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Looper, Knives Out, and Wake Up, Dead Man.

HALATION

Honest halation.

Halation is most compelling when you feel it without seeing it - an intrinsic quality of the image, not an effect laid on top. Steve Yedlin's halation algorithm for Genesis beautifully models physical halation's subtle diffusion of high-exposure areas.

3-Day Film Creative Masterclass

w/ Steve Yedlin, Dr. Mitch Bogdanowicz and Cullen Kelly.

Day 1: Knowing Film Like You Actually Use It - with Dr. Mitch Bogdanowicz

Knowing film inside and out will give you way more creative ideas, speed,
and output using the photochemical toolset in Genesis.

Mitch will cover all things film and how it works. From the terms you want to know
(better than your own kids’ names), to the evolution of negetive and print stocks,
to how film stocks are actually engineered.

Day 2: Photochemical Look Design & Color Grading - with Cullen Kelly

With Cullen you'll dive right into using that film knowledge, to get way more out of Genesis.
From how to get a specific look to matching LUTs and the differences you want to be
thinking about with digital vs photochemical look dev.

As part of the session, you'll do a full grade-along on a scene or short film, putting everything together and experiencing the amazing speed Genesis gives you when you grade.

Day 3: Lighting for a Film LUT - with Steve Yedlin

Now that you've learned how to take the history of photochemical image reproduction
and harness it to build the perfect look for your story in Genesis,
we need one more thing: great lighting.

In day 3, cinematographer Steve Yedlin, ASC will show you how to make your scene
come to life with a 4-hour session focused on lighting for a film LUT.

Whether you're a DP on set or a colorist looking to take their work to the next level
by grading more photographically, knowing how to light when working with film
will help you craft unforgettable images.
